Gathering Asia’s leaders to enhance regional development

The inauguration ceremony for the China Daily Asia Leadership Roundtable was held in Hong Kong on November 30.

“The Asia Leadership Roundtable aims to establish a platform for high-level discussions among political and business leaders and the academic elite of the Asian Pacific region,” said Zhou Li, Deputy Secretary-General of China Daily, who has also been appointed Executive Chairman of the roundtable.

Mr Zhou told the gathering, the roundtable will regularly invite decision makers and important people from political and business circles to act as honorary chairman. Attendees of the roundtable will discuss issues of strategic importance concerned with the region’s economic, industrial and social development. In cooperation with the Asia News Network, the roundtable will work with a total of 21 mainstream media in 19 countries and regions in Asia. Conferences will be held in participating countries on a rotational basis.

Ronnie Chan Chi-chung, chairman of Hang Lung Group Limited and vice chairman of the board of the Asia Society, and Pana Janviroj, Executive Director of Asia News Network and president of The Nation, media group of Thailand, and a number of political and business elites and consular representatives attended the inaugural ceremony in Hong Kong.

The first roundtable will be held in Hong Kong on December 13. Tony Tyler, Chief Executive of Cathay Pacific Airways, will act as honorary chairman and will speak about the opportunities and challenges for Asia’s airline industry.

Mr Zhou also announced that the China Daily Asia Edition newspaper will be officially launched on December 10, 2010. The Asia Edition will cover hot issues in the Asia region from a distinctively Chinese standpoint. The newspaper’s mission is to promote communication and mutual understanding between China and other Asian countries, he said. The publisher of the weekly newspaper will work closely with the Asia News Network, reaching news stands in Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, Singapore, India and Australia.


Introductions of the organizations

The Asia News Network (ANN) was founded in March 1999, with headquarters in Thailand. It is now comprised of 21 mainstream newspapers from 19 Asian countries, making it the world’s largest multinational news network.
