Dr. Federico “Poch” Macaranas is a Full Professor at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) handling Economics and Top Management courses, and concurrently the Chairman of the Economics Department. He was the Co-Director of the AIM ASEAN 2015 Project and was the Director of the AIM ABAC Research Project where he authored the Technical Report entitled: Globalizing MSMEs from a Business and Society Perspective (AIM, 2015), and co-authored the inspirational coffee table book entitled Going Global Together (AIM, 2015).

Under the administration of Pres. Fidel V. Ramos (1992-1996), he was Acting Secretary of Foreign Affairs on numerous occasions, while holding the post of Undersecretary for Economic Affairs, serving as Chairman of the 1996 Senior Officials Meetings (SOM) of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).  He is best known for initiating/ steering seminal issues in the agenda of Trade and Investment Liberalization (TILF) and Economic Technical Cooperation in APEC, helping produce the landmark document: Manila Action Plan for APEC (MAPA), and the APEC endorsement of the Information Technology to the World Trade Organization that transformed the global economy. In 2001, President Arroyo conferred on him the Gawad Mabini, Dakilang Kamanong Award, the highest award given by the Philippine government for diplomatic service.

His numerous publications include books and book chapters, journals as well as popular articles on human resource development; regional economic integration; regional, national and local competitiveness; science and technology in development management.
