At the forum, co-organized by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, the panelists examined Hong Kong’s position in the “Belt and Road” Initiative, which was mooted by President Xi Jinping in 2013, how Hong Kong can “super-connect” the countries and regions along the “Belt and Road” and what are the challenges and opportunities for Hong Kong businesses.
"Hong Kong can play a pivotal role in the implementation of the country's Belt and Road Initiative. This Initiative is at heart about promoting connectivity, development and progress among people and markets. The Honorable C Y LEUNG, Chief Executive, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region delivered the keynote address before joining the board of panelists.
Mr. Stephen T.H. NG, Chairman, Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce said The SMEs (small- and medium-sized enterprises), many of which are involved in consumer goods areas and professional services, are waiting to see whether the market is ready for them. We hope to organize visits to these various countries and promote exchanges between trade bodies. Knowledge is the first thing.
Dr. Jonathan CHOI, Chairman, The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce said The SAR government can do more to help Hong Kong companies to work together with SOEs to invest in ASEAN countries.
Prof. K.Y. Edward CHEN, President, Qianhai Institute for Innovative Research said Hong Kong as a super connector under the "Belt and Road Initiatives" should focus more on connecting China and Southeast Asia Countries, Southern Asia countries and Middle East countries and promoting its financial services and innovation industry in those countries.
Mr. Ivan K L CHU, Chief Executive, Cathay Pacific Airways Limited said As the idea of “Belt and Road Initiative” gets promoted, there will be more trade, tourism as well as exchange of people and goods, the Hong Kong air sector needs to do more to fulfill the need.
Mr. Mark E. TUCKER, Group Chief Executive and President, AIA Group Limited said Infrastructure, as an asset class, is absolutely a natural base for long-term insurance companies. He also mentioned that Hong Kong is a wonderful place, as a city with infrastructure to be able to do that.
